Eight years after impressing critics with "Pollock," his feature debut behind the camera, actor Ed Harris returns to the director's chair with the Old West drama "Appaloosa." Adapted from Robert Parker's 2005 novel, the $20 million film stars Mr. Harris as Virgil Cole, a laconic lawman who -- along with partner Everett Hitch (Viggo Mortensen) -- is hired to bring a corrupt rancher (played by Jeremy Irons) to justice. Mr. Harris, star of such films as "Glengarry Glen Ross" and "A History of Violence," recently spoke with The Wall Street Journal.

At Tuesday's "Appaloosa" premiere, Ed Harris said he was eager to get back in the director's chair after the eight years since "Pollack."

"After 'Pollack' I didn't want to direct for a while because it is very consuming," he said. "My daughter was growing up, so I wanted to spend some time with her."

But after reading Robert B. Parker's novel -- the basis for the Western pic -- Harris said he was ready to saddle up again.

"I read 'Appaloosa' and I thought, Jeez, I would sure like to get back behind the camera and in front of it," said Harris, who also stars in the film alongside Viggo Mortensen and Renee Zellweger.

Mortensen got stuck on his flight back from the Toronto Film Festival and missed the screening but managed to make it to the Soho Grand Hotel after-party, where he was joined by guests Julian Schnabel, Amy Ryan, Elijah Wood and Jessica Lange.
