Inane questions

The cast of Ed Harris's western Appaloosa all deserve sheriff's badges for weathering - with humour and amazing good grace - some totally inane questions directed their way at the opening, embarrassing press conference at TIFF.

The first no-brainer question lobbed their way was whether it was easier to be naked on screen or shoot big guns. "That's a total load of rubbish," Jeremy Irons, looking floored, responded. Harris jumped to his rescue, saying, "It's definitely easier to be naked and shoot guns." Renée Zellweger was then asked if she liked tacos (the movie was shot in New Mexico.) Looking equally askance, she gamely smiled: "Did you say taos?" to which Harris interjected and said, "No, tacos."

"Oh yes, the tacos were great," Zellweger replied, and the cast collapsed in laughter.

Fresh from its adventures with Mr. Ritchie’s gang, the Warner Brothers team was at it again on Friday morning with Ed Harris and the upcoming western “Appaloosa,” a New Line remnant of which Mr. Harris is a star, the director, a producer and one of the writers.

With titles like that, Mr. Harris should qualify for an enduring place in the (almost) all-superheroes-all-the-time regimen that Jeff Robinov, president of Warner’s movie group, has been knocking into place at his studio. (Warner Brothers is also home to Superman and the rest of the DC Comics stable, and some would say that Harry Potter is a superhero of sorts too.)

But Mr. Harris was in low-key, Western-guy mode on Friday, as were his co-stars Viggo Mortensen, Jeremy Irons and Renée Zellweger.

“They have a good time doing what they do, they’re buddies,” Mr. Harris said, in explaining the main characters in his old-time, small-town story. He got more animated when he danced a little jig in his seat, trying to show what it’s like to shoot guns naked. That came in a roundabout response to a Mexican reporter’s question as to whether the genre doesn’t make “killing people seem like sport for Americans.” Mr. Irons did the honor in tackling the question head-on, elegantly dismissing it with the word “rubbish.”

TORONTO: Ed Harris on ‘Appaloosa,’ acting and film crticism

Walking into to interview with any actor/director can be a tad intimidating, even after 20 years of doing it. They have a tendency to be…difficult. But 30 minutes into my interview with Ed Harris, he pays me a compliment that could keep wind in my sails for the duration of the fest: “Thank you for your integrity, intelligence and dedication to your job. This has been a pleasure.” He smiled as we shook hands and he walked me to the door

Harris has been an actor I have admired since first seeing him as squeaky clean John Glenn in “The Right Stuff” back in 1983, which he followed with a chilling turn as a mercenary in “Under Fire,” his bright blue eyes windows into hell’s furnace. His career has moved along an interesting trajectory, shifting between supporting roles and leads with ease, often dominating whatever film he takes on with powerhouse acting.

Oddly enough, he did not receive his first Oscar nomination until 1995 when he gave a sterling performance as Gene Kranz in “Apollo 13,” followed by another brilliant turn in “The Truman Show” as a God-like TV producer. He nurtured his dream project, “Pollock,” through its funding, before taking up the reins as director and grabbing another Oscar nod in front of the camera. And in 2002 he was nominated for a fourth time for his AIDS-afflicted writer in “The Hours,” a critically acclaimed ensemble piece from director Stephen Daldry.

It is doubtful that “Appaloosa” will see any Oscar attention. Though it is beautifully shot and the art direction is sublime, the film was something of a letdown, despite strong work from Harris and co-stars Viggo Mortensen and Jeremy Irons.

“I gave the book to Viggo here at this festival in 2005,” Harris said, “when we were here for ‘A History of Violence.’ There was no one else I really wanted to do the film with, and I certainly never considered anyone else. I just thought he and I would make a strong partnership on screen. We don’t hang out, I mean we’re friends, but we don’t see much of each other. He agreed to do it, and Viggo’s the sort of guy where his word is his bond, so that gave me the start to keep moving on the film. It didn’t really occur to me that the film was a western, what struck me was the relationship between these two men in 1882, that’s what really grabbed me about the film. That it happened to be a western was incidental.”

I asked Harris about his gift for projecting intense danger on screen, genuine menace, which drew a smile from the actor, known for his outbursts on set and in press conferences.

“It’s no secret I have let my temper get the best of me sometimes,” he smiles, “but I hope that is behind me these days. I am not sure where it comes from, from me obviously, that’s a really good question. I have always gone after the truth in my work, and if the truth means bringing a sense of danger to the role that is what I go for; it just sort of happens, I guess.

“The bottom line for me is it has to be truthful. I mean what’s the point if it’s not? I tend to have a competitive spirit, something left over from my place as an athlete in my youth, and that quest for truth has often gotten me into some trouble, but I would not want to work any other way.”

Harris believes he learned a great deal more on this film about directing, about delegating, than he did on “Pollock.” With his directorial debut, Harris was very hands on, often stretching himself too far, while with “Appaloosa” he allowed the designers to do their job and the sound crew to do theirs. He found himself more willing to give up certain aspects because he developed a trust for them.

“I had immersed myself in ‘Pollock’ entirely,” he said, “so much so that I lost myself in the role and the film. With this one I was much more patient as a director, I had to be because the elements often worked against us. I found myself more relaxed on set, perhaps because I had done the job before and had more confidence in myself.”

As for the place of the American western in post-9/11 America, Harris smiled and said he would not get drawn into a political discussion because that was not what he intended with the film. He liked the simplicity of the story, he liked the characters’ relationship and how it evolved, and he understood how not all that much has changed since 1882. In the film an American President pardons Bragg (the villain) for murder, which is not so far off what has happened in recent years with criminals and even Presidents being pardoned by the sitting President.

“But,” he added with a smile, “I am not making any sort of political statement you understand.”

I explained to Harris that I started my career as an actor, studied the method and found out I was dreadful when the critics attacked me mercifully after a few stage performances. I became a stage director, though my real love was always film, and I wanted to write and celebrate the art of the cinema.

“But that’s great that you have acted, that you tried, because I’ll tell you in this day and age film criticism, criticism of any kind in the arts, is a dying art, and it is an art form if done well. Far too many critics have no idea what they are talking about, no sense of film history, and what is not understood is that we need film criticism,” he said.

“I got some tough reviews when I started out, and they stay with you. I mean 30 years later I remember what they said, and if I saw them today I might give them this (the finger),” he said with a grin.

Appaloosa is a throwback western, a film teeming with the sun-drenched desert, an endless blue sky, and quick-as-lightening gunslingers. It deals with heavy themes like loyalty, sacrifice, friendship and trust said director and star Ed Harris at Friday's press conference for the movie. It was little surprise, then, when a journalist asked one of its stars, Renée Zellweger, if she liked the tacos in New Mexico, where the film was shot.

"The tacos were great," replied the puzzled starlet.

Harris, after finishing laughing, wasn't as effusive in his praise of the region's culinary delights: "But New Mexican burritos..." he said, giving a thumbs down.

Yes, strange questions are to be expected at these festival pressers - one reporter asked co-star Jeremy Irons if it was easier to be naked or shoot guns in a film; after Irons brushed off the question Harris remarked "the best thing is to be naked and shoot guns" -- so one must dig through the answers for some semblance of insight.

Appaloosa -- Harris's first directing effort since 2000's much-lauded Pollock biopic -- is about a pair of lawmen, Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch, who come to a tiny Old West town to save it from Bragg, a murderous rancher played by Irons. Zellweger plays Allie, a women who comes between the two men. The film is based on the novel by Robert Parker, a book Harris first read while on a horseback riding trip years ago.

"I read the first couple scenes between Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch....and I just got tickled. I was laughing, I was smiling. It made me feel good," said Harris. He hadn't even finished the novel before he called his agent to see if the movie rights were available. Harris adapted, directed, produced and starred in the film; with one man being responsible for the storytelling, said Irons, the film has a "purity" that films written "by committee" lack.

"It was a very easy decision [to join the cast]," said Irons. "For an Englishman to play in a western, that's what we all dream off...that's a real movie. That's a movie we were brought up on."

Mortensen, sporting a dark olive floral patterned shirt and black pants, lamented the difficulties facing western films.

"It's hard to get westerns made," he said. "Most westerns, probably 99% of them are horrible."

This one, though, follows in the classic western tradition of filmmakers like Sam Peckinpah and John Ford.

"There's a sort of simplicity about the western," said Irons. "It can deal with big subjects in an almost poetic way."

Zellweger said she signed up for the film after about five minutes on the phone with Harris, while Mortensen came on board after 2005's TIFF, when Harris, his co-star in that year's breakout film A History of Violence, gave him a copy of the novel. Mortensen said he was hooked by the dynamics between the two men. They love each other, said Harris, even if they might never say those exact words. It's a deep, complex friendship, though don't expect it to unravel like the one between the cowboys in Brokeback Mountain.

Said Mortensen: "They cut those scenes."

THE UNAVOIDABLE QUESTION

Of course, someone had to ask Renée Zellweger about a possible Bridget Jones's Diary 3.

"You'll have to ask Ed," said Zellweger.

Harris said the third installment would see the chick-lit heroine go back to the Old West.

"We're working on the script," he deadpanned.

HAIR, HAIR EVERYWHERE

Mortensen sports some cool-looking facial hair in Appaloosa. But Viggo got his sarcasm on when asked "did you grow it yourself or was it a piece?"

"No, I had someone grow it for me," he replied. "There's a stubble farm, as it happens, just north of Sante Fe. They grow the best beards in the word there....I got to watch them put the seeds in, and come see how they fertilize it."

It was a Friday morning like no other as journalists made a date with Renee Zellweger, Jeremy Irons, Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris, who kicked off the first of the Toronto International Film Festival's press conferences.

Speaking about their new Western film, Appaloosa, based on the Robert Parker novel, the star-studded cast revealed that they had no qualms about saying no to the part.

"It was a very easy decision. I'm a big admirer of Ed's and it's a dream for an Englishman to be playing in a Western," said Jeremy.

Renee recalled: "I was working on Leatherheads at the time and I got a call from Ed.

Viggo added: "It's hard to get good Westerns. 99 percent of them are horrible - I won't name them. But you also get good ones and the ones that are good are really good. This one has the makings of a great one."

Ed, who wrote, directed and starred in it, hopes that audiences will like it.

"The film was made to be enjoyable," he said.

"The story is well told yet it still takes its time. It's about friendship, trust, loyalty and sacrifice. It's a roughly elegant film."
